Growing up, one of the things we have constantly learned and heard from various sources is that everyone is unique, and that this fact is something to be embraced. As such, it is important to remember when designing that what works for one user won't work for another, and that will always be the case. Not every user of the same product has the same needs and desires, so trying to please everyone when designing anything is impossible.
Although it is important to focus on one or a few personas, it is more important to focus on the particular scenarios and situations in which the personas will be using the product. Focusing on the situation rather than the user, Hoekman says, is the key to useful and successful design. For Project #2, applying this idea to research could've meant writing a short paragraph describing a user's choices and actions leading up to his workout, as a preamble to the usability test.
