Reflection on "The Whole Game"

In the past few weeks, I've learned that the whole game of HCI design is revolves around iteration and teamwork. It starts with having good communication with others who can help you succeed. This good communication can come from the teamwork guidelines Marty gave us in class. A specific example of these guidelines would be the requirement for all decisions to be unanimous.

From there, it involves steadily focusing the idea while at the same time exploring as many possibilities on every level as possible until the design is something that works and works well to solve a problem. Specifically, I remember the lecture in which Marty talked about the flow chart and expanding and contracting ideas. He also mentioned filling up the entire wall in the classroom with ideas that slowly contract downwards to the final product.

  1. Protocols are very important, especially the unanimous voting rule. I believe another important point that has been brought up in class is that no design is perfect and can always be improved. Yay to learning the whole game!

  2. Expansion and contraction in design is a fascinating topic. Marty used the example of sketching more ideas (expansion) and then distilling only those features you think are most important (contraction). Another way to look at expansion is researching. And, contraction could be the process of visualizing your design (possibly through sketches) and then creating a usable version that can be tested.
