I would say Google is great example of obvious design,its interface it quite simple, however, 95% user using Google would start from its search engine. thus the 95% of its interface is just a search box with Google icon, and the rest is blank.
the search features are absolutely necessary for users to complete the activity the Google is meant to support. this interface helps users get started quickly so they can become intermediate user as soon as possible.
I'm also curious about the statistics. I believe a lot of people are Google searching directly from Chrome... that means the Google "search page" changes depending on what users are looking at!
