For project 3, we revised the YouTube site specifically focusing on the "Recommended" section where it provides possible videos that the user would be interested in. We changed that feature so that the user could personalize their account to allow YouTube to then access their information and select videos that the user would actually be interested in and watch. One of our revisions included a list of interests that the user would choose from which was part of the personalization process. There are about 20 interests listed that the user can choose from. I chose this as my feature to drop. I think that it could possibly be unnecessary to have all of those interests listed, and to maybe just have a text box where the user types in their interests on their own.
I ran this idea through Hoekman's "Unnecessary Test" which consists of three questions that the designer should answer on behalf of the feature:
1. "Is there more than one way to complete the task this feature supports?"
Yes, we could just provide the user with a text box where they would be able to type in what their
interests are instead of checking a bunch of already listed ones.
2. "Does this feature contribute directly to the completion of the task?"
Yes, because YouTube needs to know what the user is interested in, however, it could be a no
because if the user makes an account, but doesn't list any interests, YouTube can still access their
search history through their account and personalize their recommended videos that way.
3. "Is the task this feature supports vital to the activity this application supports?"
No, because a user can still enjoy and use YouTube without even looking at the "Recommended"
section on the homepage. It is just an added tool and a unique feature on the site.
After going through this test, it seems that this list of features is not a vital feature in our revision. It is helpful, but their are alternate solutions to complete this task that could be more helpful and simple.
