Soundcloud is a website that makes it extremely easy for anyone to create an account and upload audio/music for the world to hear. It is sort of like a youtube for music, and I think that's what the creators were going for when the created it. They saw the popularity of a site that enabled users to not only share their own content but also consume countless of strangers' content as well. Soundcloud includes an "Explore" tab that allows users to scour the catalogs of sound cloud for music, which sheds light on another goal of the website -- allowing musicians and other creators of audio to be discovered and heard. A lot of people have blown up using websites like sound cloud, and it definitely introduces a lot of potential for artists. I think their mission statement is pretty well-summed up in their tag line - "Hear the world's sounds."
