In Project 3 we looked at the issues regarding the YouTube inbox. The main issue with the inbox is that it is buried within the website and very difficult to find. To combat this problem, we provided buttons to take the user to the inbox in two new locations. The first location is found in a spot near the user's account information and channel page. The second is in the Google+ notification tab.
After reading Hoekman's "Drop Nice-to-Have Features," I would be willing to drop the second inbox button which we placed within the notification tab. After performing Hoekman's Unnecessary Test, it is evident that this feature is not necessary. To begin with, adding this extra button only creates an additional way to complete the task--this is not needed. While this feature does contribute directly to the completion of the task, this feature is not vital to the activity this application supports. Because "no" was answered to two of the three questions, it is obvious that our second addition to our redesign is not completely necessary.
Hoekman also talks explains another way to cut down on features: The 60-Second Deadline. In this test, the designer only has 60 seconds to decide which features are essential and which are only nice-to-have. After performing this test, I concluded that having a button in the notification tab as well as our original position is only a nice-to-have feature. It is not essential to our design; therefore, cutting this feature would aid in making the design more simplistic.
