What is Absolutely Necessary
Mine and my partner's redesign for Youtube originally included the idea of cutting back. Starting out with the project, we realized that a major compliant with the current homepage of Youtube was that it was much too cluttered and difficult to find basic items, such as the search bar, which was mashed across the top of the page, sandwiched between the top and ad space.
Instead, my partner and I made the search bar larger and moved the ad to the top of the page instead, putting the more used search bar at the center of the page next to a larger Youtube logo. Since we considered that to be the primary function of Youtube for almost all users, we stripped down the other features to the bear minimum, even getting rid of video descriptions.
When we tested the design, our feedback included the request for video descriptions beneath the videos listed for clarification purposes. It turned out that we had actually cut too much of the design and entered into what was essential instead of just nice to have.
